The series 16 emulator can operate in text mode, allowing it to run in simple command-line environments that do not provide graphical user interface. Even when compiled to use a GUI the emulator can be used in text mode by using the ``-t'' command line option.

The main complication in text mode is that the keyboard is used for two distinct things. It is used both as the input for the ASR (teletype) and to give commands to the "monito" that controls execution of the emulator.
